Short Notices – More News From Badger’s Sett

I was very pleased to see a badger cub at my little canteen last week but disappointed to have seen only one cub. Had this been a bad year for them, I wondered?

Better news last night, when three boisterous cubs came for what I call the ‘Second Sitting’, that is when after all the first batch of food has been eaten I have to put out another serving for latecomers, or the just very hungry – mind you, badgers can eat a lot quite quickly and I’ve never yet seen them leave the table before every possible scrap has been located and consumed.

The cubs are comical as well as cute. They bounce around, squabbling, under the patient, watchful eye of an adult who wanders off before the most optimistic (or hungry) cub has quite given up hope that a treat might still be found even though it has covered the ground a dozen times.

Alas, these days I’m more often than not in my bed when they come, but I’m going to try to stay awake, camera ready, for their midnight visit.
